Tanzania
This enormous East African country lies just south of the equator, and is bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique with the Indian Ocean to the East. This vast country is home to an exciting diversity of wildlife. With over 420 species and subspecies of mammal, over 1050 species of birds and nearly 1400 species of butterflies. Nearly a quarter of the country is protected by National Parks, conservation areas and reserves. Parts of its coast and waters are preserved as marine parks. One of the greatest spectacles of the world takes place here with the migration of the wildebeest followed by their predators in Serengeti with some 2 million beasts on the move. Most of Tanzania is of high plateau reaching between 900 and 1800 meters and high is fringed by the two arms of the Great Rift Fault. The western arm is marked by the deep freshwater Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika. These lakes are the largest and deepest in Africa. Here hundreds of species of unique fish have evolved while the shallow alkaline lakes of the eastern arm like Lake Natron, are the breeding place of Africa’s flamingos. Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, offers a challenge, while the coastal waters are perfect for diving and snorkeling. With good quality accommodation, what a fantastic way to see the wealth of unlimited sights. The vast plains of the Serengeti with thousands of animals, the pink mass of flamingos in the lake at Ngorongoro, boating on the Rufiji, passing crocodiles and hippos, tracking chimpanzees, diving in the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
